A pilgrims’ mass is held daily at noon in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the purported resting place of the apostle St. James the Greater. On special occasions the giant incense burner known as the Botafumeiro is brought out and swung above the congregation. It was originally used to fumigate sweaty and disease-ridden pilgrims. The pilgrims today are still sweaty as they often enter the cathedral after hours of fast walking on the last leg of their pilgrimage, and the Botafumeiro is still an amazing sight as it swings out over the heads of the congregation, almost reaching the rafters of the cathedral.
