A statue of St. James in the church of Santa María in Viana sports all the traditional iconography of the saint. He holds a book and wears an apostle’s robe. At the same time he wears the signs of a pilgrim: scallop shell, walking staff, and gourd (traditionally used as a canteen for water or wine).
